discover lake county

Lake County is a geological and ecological wonder, with the one of the largest and oldest natural freshwater lakes in North America.  With its natural shoreline, Clear Lake is home to large and varied populations of shorebirds and water fowl. The lake is full of bass, crappie, catfish and carp.  Surrounded by volcanic lands, there are hotsprings and active geothermal geysers in the area.  The soils and climate rival neighboring Napa and Sonoma county for producing award winning wines.  The air in Lake County is said to be the cleanest in the nation.

FISHING
FISHING

Clear Lake is known as the top bass fishing lake west of the Rockies.  It is also good for catfish fishing.  There are several fishing derbies on the lake and commercial outfits that will teach you how to fish for bass.

WINETASTING

There are over 25 wineries in Lake County.  Some of our favorites are Gregory Graham, Six Sigma and the Tuscan estate Brassfield.

ANDERSON MARSH STATE HISTORIC PARK

Anderson Marsh is located between the towns of Clearlake and Lower Lake, on hwy 53.  This is a beautiful park for easy hiking, viewing wildlife and birds.

BIRDWATCHING & WILDLIFE VIEWING

Lake County is renowned for its birdwatching.  The lake and shoreline is home to large numbers of grebes, cormorants, white pelicans, ducks and geese, egret and heron.  Look for our state bird the beautiful California quail, also pheasant, kingfisher, bald eagle, and osprey scooping fish out of the lake. Paddle down Cache Creek in the spring and look up in the trees to see groups of large nests of cormorants and egrets.  River otters, raccoons, fox and bears can also be spotted.
